The Sindh Home Department has announced a comprehensive ban on pillion riding throughout the province in anticipation of the Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA). This directive, issued on Thursday, aims to ensure public safety and maintain order during the religious observance scheduled for August 4. The Chehlum marks a significant day of mourning and remembrance for the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and the Karbala martyrs.
Chehlum, observed annually on the 20th of Safar-ul-Muzaffar, concludes the 40-day mourning period commemorating the tragic events of the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD. Devotees across Sindh participate in solemn processions featuring traditional elements such as Alam, Tazia, and Zuljinah, which are carried through various cities. These gatherings are deeply spiritual and hold immense cultural importance for the Shia community.
In a significant development aimed at bolstering security, the Sindh Home Department has also extended the enforcement of Section 144 across the entire province for an additional month, effective from August 1. This legal provision prohibits activities such as wall chalking, rallies, demonstrations, and the public display of weapons, all of which remain banned to prevent any untoward incidents during this sensitive period.
Furthermore, the notification clarifies that only security personnel employed by registered security companies will be authorized to carry weapons while on official duty. These measures reflect the authorities’ commitment to ensuring a peaceful and secure environment for all citizens observing the Chehlum and related events across Sindh.
