PM Shehbaz Declares Human Trafficking Victims Should Not Be Treated as Criminals

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has made a significant statement asserting that individuals who fall prey to human trafficking should not be regarded or treated as criminals. This declaration underscores the importance of distinguishing between perpetrators and victims in the fight against human trafficking. By emphasizing the victim status of trafficked individuals, the Prime Minister aims to foster a more empathetic and just approach within the legal and social frameworks.

Human trafficking remains a critical issue globally and in Pakistan, involving the exploitation of vulnerable populations for forced labor, sexual exploitation, and other abuses. Victims often face stigma and legal challenges that exacerbate their trauma. The Prime Minister’s stance is a call to reform policies and practices that currently criminalize these victims, advocating for protective measures and rehabilitation rather than punishment.

In a broader context, this position aligns with international human rights standards that promote victim-centered approaches to trafficking. It also highlights the government’s commitment to addressing human trafficking through comprehensive strategies that include prevention, protection, and prosecution of offenders. Such a perspective is vital for improving the lives of survivors and enhancing the effectiveness of anti-trafficking efforts nationwide.
