Zoo Team Saves Critically Endangered Madeiran Land Snails on Bugio Island

In a significant conservation effort, zoo staff successfully rescued 21 Madeiran land snails, a species on the brink of extinction, from a remote rock on Bugio Island, Portugal. These snails represent one of the few remaining populations of this critically endangered species, underscoring the fragility of their habitat. The discovery of such a small number highlights the urgent need for protective measures to prevent their complete disappearance.

Madeiran land snails are native to the Madeira archipelago and have faced severe threats due to habitat loss, invasive species, and environmental changes. The isolation of these snails on a solitary rock emphasizes how fragmented and vulnerable their populations have become. Conservationists are now focused on breeding programs and habitat restoration to increase their numbers and ensure long-term survival.

Meanwhile, this rescue operation draws attention to the broader challenges faced by many island-endemic species worldwide, which often suffer from limited ranges and human impact. The successful retrieval of these snails by zoo professionals not only preserves genetic diversity but also serves as a critical step toward raising awareness about biodiversity conservation. Continued efforts will be essential to prevent the extinction of this unique species.
