Power Failure at Dhabeji Pumping Station May Cause Karachi Water Shortage

A power failure at the Dhabeji pumping station threatens to disrupt Karachi’s water supply, the Karachi Water & Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) announced on Sunday. As the primary water supply hub for the city, the Dhabeji station depends on a consistent power source, with even brief outages leading to immediate interruptions in water delivery.

The disruption originated from a cable fault in the third phase of the pumping station, which technical teams are actively working to repair. This issue has resulted in the temporary shutdown of three pumps at the facility. The KWSC spokesperson highlighted that this fault could reduce Karachi’s daily water supply by approximately 75 million gallons.

Areas expected to experience water shortages include North Nazimabad, Nazimabad, Gulberg Town, New Karachi, Landhi, Korangi, and parts of Scheme 33. The KWSC administration is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with the Karachi Electric (KE) to expedite power restoration.

Residents have been urged to conserve water and avoid unnecessary usage during this period. Notably, earlier this month, a similar power outage at the K-2 pumping station caused the shutdown of three major pumps, further impacting the city’s water distribution.
