A government official has been penalized with a fine of Rs500,000 for subjecting a female colleague to repeated humiliation through derogatory and discriminatory language, as determined by the Federal Ombudsperson for Protection Against Harassment of Women at Workplace.
The Ombudsperson’s decision highlighted that the officer targeted the woman specifically due to her inability to have children, using gender-based insults to demean her. This behavior was identified as a reflection of a discriminatory mindset that fostered a hostile work environment.
In a significant development, the ruling revealed that the accused conducted a deliberate campaign against the complainant by posting multiple offensive messages online. Additionally, the officer allegedly fabricated a fake book title along with false authorship and publishing details to mock the woman further.
The Ombudsperson noted that employing terms linked to transgender identity as insults is not only inappropriate but also perpetuates harmful stereotypes against a vulnerable community. While ethnic or linguistic references alone may not constitute harassment, the deliberate use of humiliating and discriminatory language against a colleague clearly falls within the definition of workplace harassment.
Emphasizing that such conduct is unacceptable in any professional setting, the Ombudsperson imposed the Rs500,000 fine on the officer to hold them accountable for their actions.
