Utah Man Arrested for Stabbing Muslim Worker in Suspected Hate Crime

Authorities in Utah have detained a man accused of stabbing a Muslim man repeatedly in an attack believed to be motivated by religious hatred. Court documents released on Tuesday reveal that the suspect confessed to targeting the victim because of his Muslim faith and expressed an intent to kill Muslims.

The incident occurred on Monday inside the Valley Fair Mall located in West Valley City, Utah. Police described the victim as having sustained numerous stab wounds and bleeding heavily. Bystanders intervened and restrained the attacker until law enforcement arrived.

The suspect, identified as 48-year-old Peter Michael Larsen, was taken into custody and charged with attempted murder and possession of a prohibited dangerous weapon. Jail records confirm his booking at Salt Lake County jail. The victim, a male Muslim kiosk employee, was hospitalized in critical condition following the assault.

the police affidavit, Larsen admitted he deliberately targeted the victim due to his religion. Reports indicate that Larsen approached the man, inquired about his name and faith, and requested a bottle of water. As the victim turned to retrieve the water, Larsen launched the stabbing attack.

Friends of the victim have established a GoFundMe campaign, noting he was stabbed 15 times and requires multiple surgeries. Larsen sustained injuries during the struggle with bystanders and was treated at a hospital before being booked.

Muslim advocacy organizations, including the Council on American-Islamic Relations, have strongly condemned the assault. Observers highlight a troubling rise in Islamophobic incidents over the past two decades, linked to factors such as anti-immigration policies, white supremacist movements, and tensions related to the conflict in Gaza.

Recent violent episodes include the 2023 stabbing of a six-year-old Muslim child in Illinois, whose assailant received a 53-year prison sentence and later died in custody, as well as a 2026 shooting at a San Diego mosque that resulted in five fatalities, including two teenage suspects.
