Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi met with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to discuss the regional situation and wider international issues. The conversation highlighted Pakistan’s mediation that facilitated the signing of an agreement between the United States and Iran, as well as the country’s enduring commitment to fostering peace both regionally and globally.
In a significant development, the UN chief lauded Pakistan’s persistent efforts and valuable contributions toward peacebuilding, recognizing the nation’s role in addressing complex regional challenges.
Meanwhile, Pakistan and Russia agreed to formalize and expand their bilateral cooperation through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between their interior ministries. This agreement aims to institutionalize collaboration on various security matters.
During a meeting at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, Interior Minister Naqvi and his Russian counterpart, Alexandrovich Kolokoltsev, reviewed progress on prior decisions and reaffirmed their dedication to strengthening bilateral ties. Their discussions covered key security concerns, including counter-narcotics, counterterrorism, cybercrime prevention, and joint police training initiatives.
They also explored strategies to combat terrorist networks active in the region, with particular attention to Afghanistan. Naqvi extended an invitation to Kolokoltsev to visit Pakistan, emphasizing Islamabad’s intent to deepen engagement with Moscow.
Addressing the issue of terrorism, Naqvi noted that over 25 terrorist organizations remain active in Afghanistan. He described the eradication of extremist groups as a collective international duty, stressing the necessity for coordinated regional and global efforts to effectively counter this threat.
