Iran and Qatar Restart Maritime Trade After Nearly Five Months

Maritime commerce between Iran and Qatar has recommenced after a suspension lasting close to five months, marking a significant step toward restoring regional trade routes. This development was confirmed by Iran’s commercial attaché stationed in Doha, highlighting renewed cooperation between the two neighboring countries.

The revival of shipping activities between Iran’s Dayyer Port and Qatar’s Al Ruwais Port came about through coordinated efforts involving the Iranian embassy in Doha and Qatari authorities. These ports primarily facilitate regional trade, and the resumption of operations is expected to bolster economic exchanges in the Gulf area.

In a significant development, this reopening follows an interim agreement signed last month between Tehran and Washington, which brought an end to hostilities after a four-month conflict. The agreement called for the restoration of pre-conflict maritime traffic in the Gulf, although disputes over transit rights in and out of the Gulf persist. Notably, Dayyer Port had sustained multiple attacks during the conflict, which had severely impacted its operations.

Meanwhile, signs of broader regional trade recovery are emerging. Last month, an official from Iran’s Trade Promotion Organisation revealed that Iranian goods had started clearing through the UAE’s Jebel Ali Port, the largest port in the region. This move signals a gradual normalization of trade flows across the Gulf, reflecting cautious optimism for improved economic ties among Gulf countries.
