PM Shehbaz Highlights Pakistan’s Sincere Role in US-Iran Peace Talks

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed optimism on Saturday that the ongoing negotiations between the United States and Iran would culminate in a lasting peace agreement within the next two months. He described Pakistan’s involvement in facilitating the dialogue as both an honour and a challenging diplomatic responsibility.

In an interview with a Turkish broadcaster, the prime minister revealed that the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding had been signed, and technical discussions were underway in Bürgenstock, Switzerland. He stressed that Pakistan had approached its role with honesty, sincerity, and caution, reflecting its position as a neighbouring and brotherly nation to Iran.

Currently in Türkiye for the Pakistan-Türkiye Business-to-Business Conference in Istanbul, PM Shehbaz referred to Türkiye as one of Pakistan’s most genuine and reliable allies, highlighting the deep-rooted relationship based on shared history, faith, and mutual support. Prior to this, he had visited Tehran to attend the funeral of the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

He described Pakistan’s mediation as a significant honour and acknowledged the complexity of the task to broker peace between the US and Iran. The prime minister noted that Islamabad had been mindful of the sensitivities involved in engaging both parties, and despite considerable challenges, the process had progressed.

PM Shehbaz extended gratitude to Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Egypt for their support in the peace efforts, emphasizing that the progress so far would not have been possible without the backing of these friendly nations. He particularly praised Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for his unwavering support towards promoting peace.

Addressing questions about the prospects for a final and binding agreement, the prime minister confirmed that talks were ongoing and cautioned that sustained effort was still required. He highlighted the pivotal role played by Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, who maintained continuous communication with both Iranian and US leaders throughout the negotiations.

The army chief’s perseverance was crucial during moments when the process seemed on the verge of collapse. PM Shehbaz noted that despite these challenges, Field Marshal Munir remained steadfast and hopeful. Additionally, the prime minister credited Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar for his diligent support of the diplomatic process.

Expressing hope for a positive outcome, PM Shehbaz said Pakistan anticipated a durable peace agreement emerging in the coming weeks. The ongoing technical talks in Switzerland, he added, would be critical in determining whether the initial understanding could evolve into a comprehensive and lasting settlement.

During the interview, the prime minister also lauded President Erdogan as a dynamic and visionary leader respected both in Türkiye and Pakistan. He noted Erdogan’s consistent advocacy for diplomacy and peaceful resolutions to regional conflicts, including those involving Gaza, Palestine, and Kashmir.

PM Shehbaz emphasized that leaders should be evaluated by the peace and stability they secure for their people and the broader region. He also commended Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman as a visionary leader contributing to regional peace and prosperity. Pakistan remains committed to supporting dialogue and diplomacy, hoping that the current momentum will reduce tensions and foster a more stable regional environment.
