Egypt achieved a historic milestone by defeating Australia 4-2 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw following extra time in the Round of 32 at Dallas Stadium on Friday. This marked Egypt’s first-ever victory in a World Cup knockout stage.
The decisive moment came when Hossam Abdelmaguid calmly converted the winning penalty after Australian players Harry Souttar and Lucas Herrington missed their spot-kicks. Egypt will now face either Argentina or Cape Verde in the Round of 16.
In a significant development, Egypt captain Mohamed Salah, who was unexpectedly included in the starting lineup after recovering from a hamstring injury, expressed his pride in the team’s achievement. Australia threatened sporadically, with Omar Marmoush and Aziz Behich forcing saves from Egypt’s goalkeeper Mostafa Shoubir. Volpato remained Australia’s most creative player, narrowly missing a curling shot just before halftime.
Shortly after the break, Egypt nearly extended their lead when Marmoush’s shot went across goal with Beach beaten. However, Australia equalized in the 55th minute when Aiden O’Neill delivered an inswinging free kick into the box, leading to an own goal by Egypt’s Mohamed Hany.
The closing moments of regular time saw intense action, including a reflex save by Beach to deny Ramy Rabia’s header and a blocked attempt by Haissem Hassan. Salah, who had been quiet during regulation, missed a key chance early in extra time by firing over the bar from Marmoush’s pass.
Australia made a tactical substitution, replacing Beach with experienced goalkeeper Mat Ryan in an effort to capitalize on his World Cup experience. Despite this, Souttar missed the first penalty by shooting over the bar, giving Egypt an early advantage in the shootout.
Egypt’s Mahmoud Saber, Ramy Rabia, and Salah successfully converted their penalties, while Australia’s Irvine and Awer Mabil scored. Herrington hit the crossbar on his attempt, and Abdelmaguid sealed the victory for Egypt with his composed finish.
