Reflecting Pool Liner Severed in Vandalism Incident, Officials Confirm

The National Park Service has confirmed that the liner of the Reflecting Pool was deliberately cut with a sharp instrument, such as a knife or razor. This damage spans approximately 300 feet, significantly impacting the pool’s structure and water retention capabilities. The incident has raised concerns about security and preservation of this iconic landmark. The Reflecting Pool, located on the National Mall, is a historic site frequently visited by millions of tourists annually.

Earlier in the week, former President Donald Trump attributed the damage to vandalism, describing the cut as a “300 foot long gash.” He also alleged that someone had introduced fertilizer into the pool’s water, potentially causing further harm to the environment and complicating restoration efforts. These claims have intensified public attention on the incident and prompted calls for increased surveillance and protective measures around national monuments.

In a significant development, authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the damage to the Reflecting Pool. The pool’s liner is critical for maintaining water levels and preventing leaks, so the cut poses a serious threat to the site’s integrity. Restoration work will likely require substantial time and resources, underscoring the broader impact of vandalism on cultural heritage sites. This event highlights the ongoing challenges in safeguarding public landmarks from intentional harm.
