Punjab Deploys 124,000+ Police and Cyber Units for Muharram Security

The Punjab government has mobilized more than 124,000 police personnel along with military and paramilitary forces to ensure security during Muharram. This extensive deployment is supported by a sophisticated surveillance system featuring cyber patrolling, QR-coded panic buttons, and anti-smog equipment.

In a significant development, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif assumed direct operational control of the Muharram security arrangements during her visit to the Provincial Intelligence Centre on Wednesday. She closely examined the real-time monitoring system ahead of Ashura.

The provincial administration has established a centralized intelligence framework that digitally connects deputy commissioners and district police chiefs across all regions. This network facilitates seamless coordination among civil administration, intelligence agencies, police, and other law enforcement bodies.

Sharif emphasized the activation of an advanced security network throughout Punjab, stating that all relevant agencies are working in unison. To address sectarian tensions, a dedicated digital media wing has launched cyber patrolling efforts aimed at blocking or limiting inflammatory online content.

Notably, this unit has already identified and reported over 6,000 objectionable social media accounts and pages to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) for prompt removal this month.

The meeting also revealed that a long-term evolution (LTE) communication system has been activated in various districts to maintain uninterrupted government data connectivity and coordination, even if standard cellular networks are disabled.

Authorities have installed 4,836 QR-coded panic buttons at Imambargahs to provide direct emergency communication for locations that may be off the grid or difficult to access.

In line with security measures, the provincial government has invoked Section 144, enforcing a complete ban on commercial drones, weapon displays, wall-chalking, unauthorized loudspeaker use, and rooftop access along designated procession routes. Additionally, pillion riding on motorcycles will be restricted on the 9th and 10th days of Muharram.

To mitigate the effects of intense seasonal heat and dust, municipal authorities have deployed specialized anti-smog water cannons to dampen procession routes and established dedicated cold-water distribution points.

The home secretary confirmed that the cabinet committee on law and order has conducted comprehensive strategic assessments across all nine provincial divisions. A multi-agency framework involving emergency services such as Rescue 1122, the health department, civil defense, and local government bodies will remain actively deployed throughout the religious observance period.
