The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has raised a nationwide weather alert, cautioning about the possibility of thunderstorms, strong winds, and heavy rainfall impacting various regions of Pakistan within the next 12 to 24 hours. The advisory highlights the increased risk of urban flooding, flash floods, landslides, and Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs), especially in vulnerable mountainous areas prone to glacier-related flooding.
In line with the seasonal forecast issued three to four months ago, the National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC) confirmed that the current weather predictions remain consistent with earlier assessments. The NDMA emphasized that it has been continuously sharing advance warnings and risk evaluations with federal, provincial, and district authorities to facilitate timely preparedness and effective emergency response.
The alert forecasts rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, windstorms, and dust storms across most parts of the country. In Punjab and Islamabad, rain is expected in cities including Rawalpindi, Murree, Attock, Chakwal, Talagang, Mandi Bahauddin, Sargodha, Gujar Khan, Gujrat, Jhelum, Sialkot, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Lahore, Faisalabad, Khushab, Jhang, Mianwali, Dera Ghazi Khan, Kasur, Okara, Sahiwal, Multan, Bahawalpur, and Rahim Yar Khan.
Meanwhile, in Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, thunderstorms and rainfall are anticipated in Gilgit, Skardu, Diamer, Astore, Ghizer, Hunza, Ghanche, Shigar, Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, Bagh, Kotli, Poonch, Hattian, Mirpur, and Bhimber. The NDMA has also issued a distinct warning about the threat of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods in Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Azad Kashmir, cautioning that such events may cause sudden flooding, landslides, and debris flows in these mountainous zones.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms is forecast for Chitral, Dir, Swat, Battagram, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Swabi, Mardan, Charsadda, Peshawar, Kohat, Parachinar, Karak, Bannu, Dera Ismail Khan, and Waziristan. Balochistan is also likely to experience thunderstorms and rain in Turbat, Kech, Awaran, Khuzdar, and Zhob. Parts of Sindh, including Jacobabad, Sukkur, Larkana, Khairpur, Dadu, Ghotki, Kashmore, Shikarpur, Shaheed Benazirabad, and Karachi, may face strong winds, dust storms, and isolated rainfall.
The NDMA stressed that district administrations and relevant agencies are maintaining vigilant monitoring of vulnerable areas and have been instructed to stay on high alert. Rescue and emergency response teams are on standby to promptly address any emerging situations. Tourists and travelers have been urged to avoid non-essential travel during heavy rainfall periods and to verify weather updates and road conditions before visiting northern regions, where road closures due to flooding, landslides, and debris flows remain a concern.
The authority encouraged citizens to stay informed by using the official “Pak NDMA Disaster Alert” mobile application and to promptly contact local administration or rescue services if emergencies arise. Provincial and district authorities have been directed to remain alert and implement precautionary measures to minimize the impact of the anticipated adverse weather conditions.
