Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Vice President Sherry Rehman on Thursday condemned India for allegedly employing water as a tool of political pressure against Pakistan. She cautioned that New Delhi’s actions could destabilize the region and breach international commitments.
Rehman stated that India’s efforts to restrict water flow constitute a clear violation of international law and established water-sharing treaties. She emphasized that any attempt to manipulate water resources to exert pressure would be unacceptable and harmful to peace in South Asia.
Highlighting India’s reported Chenab–Beas Link Project, Rehman described it as a significant infringement on Pakistan’s water rights. She warned that diverting rivers or altering natural water courses could have severe consequences for regional stability and the millions who depend on these shared waters for their livelihoods.
The PPP leader characterized India’s strategy as a failed effort to coerce Pakistan, cautioning that such policies risk escalating tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors. She expressed deep concern over what she termed India’s “water aggression,” labeling it a potential “ticking time bomb” threatening peace in South Asia.
Rehman argued that attempts to dominate shared water resources could ignite new conflicts and deepen mistrust across the region. She further asserted that India’s approach contradicts international agreements and humanitarian principles, warning that ongoing provocations over water could jeopardize the region’s future and long-term stability.
