US Imposes Sanctions on Cuban Leaders and Key Institutions

The United States has introduced a fresh set of sanctions aimed at several high-profile Cuban individuals, including President Miguel Díaz-Canel and his spouse. This move also extends to the son and grandson of former Cuban President Raúl Castro, despite their lack of official government roles.

In a significant development, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that sanctions have been applied to multiple Cuban organizations. These include the Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces, the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples, Amistur Cuba, the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution, and Minera La Victoria S.A.

Relations between the US and Cuba have historically been strained, but recent months have seen an escalation in pressure from the administration of President Donald Trump. These latest sanctions come as Cuba faces a severe energy crisis, further exacerbating its already fragile economic situation.

President Trump described Cuba as a beautiful country but emphasized the need for governmental change. He noted that his administration is closely watching developments on the island. However, he also stated that his immediate priorities lie with issues concerning Iran, and that Cuba-related policies will receive more attention once those matters are addressed.

There has been no official response from the Cuban government regarding the new sanctions or President Trump’s comments. Nonetheless, tensions between the two nations persist, rooted in longstanding political and diplomatic disagreements.
