ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif convened a high-level meeting to review ongoing reforms within the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), focusing on modernizing the tax system and enhancing revenue collection mechanisms.

A detailed strategy was introduced to transform Inland Revenue operations by making them more efficient, transparent, and largely faceless through the implementation of automation technologies. This initiative aims to significantly reduce human involvement and discretionary powers in tax processes, thereby promoting fairness and operational efficiency.

In a significant development, the prime minister emphasized that adopting an automated tax management system would mark a major advancement in governance. He highlighted that this system is expected to increase revenue generation, improve transparency, and build greater public confidence in the tax administration.

Shehbaz Sharif also underscored the importance of continuing reforms to broaden the documentation of the economy and expand the tax base. Additionally, he commended provincial governments for their efforts in combating the illegal cigarette trade, recognizing their role in supporting the overall reform agenda.

In line with these reforms, the prime minister directed that the new automated income tax collection system be initially launched in Islamabad. The meeting included federal ministers, ministers of state, the Attorney General, and senior government officials, reflecting a coordinated approach to advancing tax reforms across the country.
