Iran Considers Limited Deal to End Conflict as Trump Affirms Ongoing Talks

Tehran is currently evaluating a proposed agreement with the United States intended to pause the ongoing conflict, although Iranian media reports indicate no direct contact with Washington has occurred in recent days. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has asserted that discussions have been proceeding without interruption.

On Tuesday, Iranian outlets conveyed that Tehran is still considering the draft of a temporary deal and has yet to provide a response. Sources cited by Mehr News Agency highlighted Iran’s cautious approach, driven by deep-rooted mistrust and concerns over previous US breaches of agreements. Similarly, the semi-official Fars News Agency noted that talks regarding a potential memorandum of understanding have recently stalled.

Contradicting these reports, Trump dismissed claims of halted communication, emphasizing that conversations have been ongoing continuously, including in the last few days. He also suggested that an agreement could be finalized within the coming week, potentially extending the current ceasefire and reopening the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, which has seen significant restrictions amid heightened tensions.

The conflict, which erupted in late February following US and Israeli strikes targeting Iran, remains in a precarious stalemate despite a fragile ceasefire. Both Iran and the US have reportedly exchanged attacks in recent weeks, maintaining a tense atmosphere.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio informed lawmakers that Iran has agreed to discuss previously off-limits aspects of its nuclear program, though he cautioned that this does not ensure a conclusive agreement. The US continues to prioritize preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, while Tehran insists its nuclear activities are peaceful.

The broader conflict has caused significant global economic and humanitarian repercussions, including disruptions to energy shipments through the Strait of Hormuz and rising oil prices. Regional tensions have also intensified with ongoing Israeli strikes in Lebanon, despite partial ceasefire efforts.

Meanwhile, Iran is advocating for a limited interim deal designed to alleviate economic pressures without making major concessions. This includes seeking sanctions relief and expanded access to oil revenues as part of the negotiations.
