Seven Dead as Tourist Jeep Falls into Ravine Near Fairy Meadows, Chilas

CHILAS: A tragic accident claimed the lives of seven individuals, including a local driver and six tourists, when their jeep plunged into a deep ravine on the road connecting Fairy Meadows to the Karakoram Highway in the Diamer district of Gilgit-Baltistan. The incident occurred as the vehicle was returning from Fairy Meadows toward the highway.

The victims included two tourists from Peshawar and four from Punjab, while the driver was a resident of Darel in Diamer district. The crash site lies in a remote mountainous area, which has significantly complicated rescue and recovery operations.

Authorities reported that the jeep fell into a gorge located at a considerable depth below the road, making access extremely difficult for emergency teams. In response, local residents immediately initiated rescue efforts on their own, while official rescue teams from Diamer were dispatched to the scene after receiving notification of the accident.

So far, the body of the driver has been recovered, with ongoing efforts to retrieve the remaining victims from the ravine. Road accidents are unfortunately frequent in Gilgit-Baltistan’s mountainous terrain, where narrow roads and challenging driving conditions often lead to fatal crashes, especially during the busy tourist season.
