US President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that he is contemplating substituting the scheduled concert series on Washington’s National Mall, which was set to commemorate the United States’ 250th anniversary, after several musicians withdrew from the lineup.
The concerts were part of the Great American State Fair, a 16-day festival planned from June 25 to July 10, 2026. Organized by the Freedom 250 group, the event was designed to extend along the National Mall, spanning from the US Capitol to the Washington Monument, and was to feature multiple concert stages, state pavilions, exhibits, rides, and various attractions.
However, the musical roster has suffered a series of withdrawals in recent weeks. On Friday, Bret Michaels, the lead vocalist of the rock band Poison, became the fifth artist to cancel his participation. Michaels stated he initially believed the event would be a nonpartisan celebration.
While organizers have not publicly explained the reasons behind the dropouts, the string of cancellations has cast doubt on whether the concert series can proceed as originally planned.
In a message posted on Truth Social, Trump suggested that if the trend of artists pulling out continues, the concerts might no longer be necessary. Instead, he proposed the possibility of delivering a speech on the National Mall, accompanied by a political-style rally.
“The fact is that I am, many, the Number One Attraction anywhere in the World,” Trump wrote. He further claimed to draw “much larger audiences than Elvis in his prime” and emphasized that he does so “without a guitar.” Trump added that he has instructed his representatives to explore the feasibility of hosting an “America Is Back” rally as part of the anniversary festivities.
Freedom 250 is a public-private partnership established by the White House to coordinate activities marking the 250th anniversary of the United States, working alongside federal agencies. It remains uncertain whether the organizers will seek replacement performers or seriously consider Trump’s suggestion to replace the concerts with a rally.
The planned celebrations aim to honor 250 years since the founding of the nation and are expected to include events across the country.
