A confidential meeting took place on May 14 at Barrister Gohar Ali Khan’s residence in Islamabad, involving Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, and PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan. This gathering has generated significant political speculation regarding its objectives and implications.
Contrary to some official narratives suggesting the discussion was solely about terrorism and security, the meeting encompassed broader political issues. Barrister Gohar’s residence has historically served as a discreet venue for sensitive high-level dialogues and acts as a trusted informal communication channel between the PTI and relevant authorities.
While the worsening security situation and terrorism concerns were addressed, a substantial portion of the conversation focused on matters related to PTI founder Imran Khan. Key topics included facilitating improved access for Imran’s family members and party leaders to visit him in jail, as well as discussing his medical care and other humanitarian considerations.
Insiders noted that if the meeting had been exclusively security-driven, the choice of venue and participants would have differed. The talks are viewed as part of ongoing backchannel efforts aimed at reducing political tensions and fostering mutual understanding among stakeholders.
PTI representatives expressed apprehensions that continued restrictions on meetings with the incarcerated former prime minister could exacerbate the already strained political environment. Meanwhile, authorities outlined their concerns and established “red lines,” particularly regarding the establishment’s unease with PTI’s political activities.
Importantly, the meeting was not conducted under duress. Sources emphasized that neither Mohsin Naqvi nor Barrister Gohar and Sohail Afridi were pressured into participating. The primary goal was to build dialogue and improve the overall political climate.
The broader aim of these discussions is to find ways to address the concerns of both the establishment and the PTI leadership, including Imran Khan and his family, to de-escalate tensions and prevent further conflict. However, a social media statement by Aleema Khanum has reportedly undermined these reconciliation efforts, jeopardizing the potential for allowing Imran’s sisters to meet him in jail.
