Marco Rubio Launches Strategic Four-Day Visit to India Post US-China Summit

United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio embarked on a significant four-day visit to India on Saturday, covering four major cities. This trip aims to revitalize relations with New Delhi shortly after Washington’s prominent summit with Beijing.

Rubio’s itinerary includes important discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as the US seeks to reassure a traditionally aligned partner amid evolving geopolitical challenges. Notably, this marks Rubio’s first visit to India and is underscored by his personal faith as a devout Catholic.

The tour began with a symbolic stop in Kolkata, where Rubio, adorned with a traditional yellow garland, visited the headquarters of Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity. There, he prayed at her tomb and met with nuns dressed in the late humanitarian’s distinctive white and blue saris. During his 90-minute visit, Rubio expressed a heartfelt commitment to supporting the homeless, terminally ill, and those suffering from leprosy.

This spiritual gesture carries domestic significance, especially as concerns grow within parts of the US political base about the treatment of minority Christians under Modi’s Hindu nationalist government. Human rights organizations have reported an increase in attacks on Christians and church vandalism since 2014, allegations the Indian government strongly denies, labeling them as politically motivated exaggerations.

Highlighting the visit’s broader implications, the US ambassador to India emphasized that the relationship between the two nations is founded not only on strategic policies but also on shared values.

Following Kolkata, Rubio traveled to New Delhi for scheduled talks with Prime Minister Modi. Later in the week, he is set to attend a ministerial meeting of the Quad alliance, which includes Australia, India, Japan, and the United States. This coalition is widely regarded as a key maritime counterbalance to China’s expanding influence in the Indian Ocean region.

China has historically viewed the Quad with suspicion, describing it as an attempt to contain its rise and criticizing India’s participation. Rubio’s visit comes at a time when US foreign policy is undergoing significant shifts. During President Trump’s recent state visit to China, he praised his reception by President Xi Jinping and revived the concept of a US-China “G2″—a bilateral framework previously abandoned due to concerns among US allies about being sidelined.

Rubio’s presence in New Delhi is interpreted as a move to reassure India and reinforce America’s commitment to its South Asian partners amid these changing dynamics.

Energy security is a central focus of Rubio’s agenda. Prior to departure, he described India as a “great ally, great partner” and indicated that the US would explore opportunities to boost oil exports to India. The country’s rapidly expanding economy remains heavily dependent on energy imports, a vulnerability exacerbated by recent US-Israeli military actions against Iran.

In response to these attacks, Iran restricted transit through the strategic Strait of Hormuz, causing a surge in global oil prices. India maintains longstanding ties with Iran while simultaneously nurturing a growing relationship with Israel, highlighted by Modi’s recent state visit to the country just before hostilities erupted.

The conflict has also prompted a significant recalibration of US relations with Pakistan. Traditionally India’s rival, Pakistan has positioned itself as a regional mediator, with its army chief visiting Tehran recently. While the US had distanced itself from Islamabad in recent years to prioritize New Delhi, President Trump has notably warmed to Pakistan, which praised his diplomacy during last year’s brief military conflict with India following the Pahalgam attack in Indian-administered Kashmir.

Relations between Washington and New Delhi were further strained when Modi did not acknowledge Trump’s role in defusing that crisis, leading to temporary US trade tariffs on Indian goods. Meanwhile, Pakistan’s welcoming of a cryptocurrency firm linked to the US president’s family adds complexity to the regional dynamics.

Rubio faces a challenging task in navigating these turbulent geopolitical waters, striving to maintain the vital US-India partnership while managing shifting alliances and regional tensions.
