A severe heatwave is forecast to affect several districts in Sindh from May 25 to 31, with temperatures rising four to six degrees Celsius above average, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) announced on Friday. This warning comes as Muslims across Pakistan prepare to observe Eid ul Adha from May 27 to 29.
The Met Office indicated that a high-pressure system will form in the upper atmosphere starting May 25. During this period, temperatures in Sukkur, Shikarpur, Jacobabad, Larkana, and Dadu are expected to hover between 47°C and 50°C. Additionally, districts including Shaheed Benazirabad, Khairpur, Ghotki, and Naushahro Feroze are also predicted to endure intense heatwave conditions.
Meanwhile, Hyderabad, Badin, Tharparkar, Umerkot, and Mirpurkhas could see temperatures ranging from 44°C to 47°C. Matiari, Tando Muhammad Khan, Jamshoro, and Sanghar are also likely to experience heat levels approaching 47°C. The Met Office has urged vulnerable groups such as children, women, and the elderly to take necessary precautions against the extreme heat. Farmers and livestock owners have been advised to safeguard their crops and animals during this period.
In Karachi, hot and humid weather is expected over the next three days, with maximum temperatures reaching 36°C today and fluctuating between 35°C and 37°C on May 23 and 24. Earlier on Thursday, the PMD issued a broader warning that moderate to severe heatwave conditions could impact most parts of the country from May 25 to 31. This is linked to the development and intensification of a high-pressure system starting May 25, which will cause significant temperature increases across Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan.
