Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar announced on Friday the successful repatriation of 11 Pakistani and 20 Iranian nationals who had been aboard vessels seized by the United States in international waters. The individuals were transported through Singapore as part of the operation.
The US Navy recently seized several ships amid enforcement of a blockade on Iranian ports, following unsuccessful negotiations aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict surrounding the Strait of Hormuz. In a statement on social media, Dar confirmed that all repatriated individuals were in good health and spirits. He emphasized that the government prioritizes the welfare and safety of Pakistanis overseas, especially those facing distress.
Dar detailed that the repatriates traveled from Singapore to Bangkok, where they boarded a flight scheduled to arrive in Islamabad later that evening, marking the next stage of their journey home. He added that arrangements would be made to facilitate the return of the Iranian nationals to their country.
In a significant development, Dar expressed gratitude to Singapore’s Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan and the Singaporean government for their ongoing support and cooperation throughout the process, which was conducted at Pakistan’s request. He also thanked Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi for entrusting Pakistan with the responsibility of repatriating Iranian citizens.
The deputy prime minister acknowledged the role of the US government in maintaining close coordination that enabled the smooth return of the Pakistani and Iranian nationals. Additionally, he appreciated the Thai government for facilitating transit through Bangkok, again at Pakistan’s request.
Dar extended thanks to officials from Pakistan’s Foreign Office, Ministry of Interior, and diplomatic missions in Singapore and Thailand for their timely coordination and efforts that ensured the operation’s success.
Notably, a week prior, Dar had confirmed that Islamabad was in close contact with Washington and other relevant parties to secure the safety and repatriation of Pakistani seafarers aboard vessels seized near Singaporean waters. He had also highlighted that the ships carried Iranian seafarers and that diplomatic efforts were ongoing to ensure their safe return.
