Alan Rothwell, the veteran actor renowned for portraying David Barlow in the original cast of Coronation Street, has passed away at the age of 89 following a short illness. Born in Oldham, Rothwell was a familiar face on ITV’s iconic soap from its inception in 1960 until 1969, playing a key role during the show’s early years.

His family announced on Thursday that Rothwell died peacefully in hospital, honoring not only his extensive acting career but also his role as a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and uncle.

Rothwell’s association with Coronation Street began well before the series aired. He had a longstanding friendship with the soap’s creator, Tony Warren, whom he met during their work on Radio’s Children’s Hour as children. Warren reportedly crafted the character of David Barlow specifically with Rothwell in mind, securing his place in television history when the soap debuted in 1960.

During his nine-year tenure on the show, Rothwell played David Barlow, the brother of Ken Barlow, a character portrayed by William Roache. His time on the series coincided with Coronation Street’s emergence as one of Britain’s most beloved television institutions.

Beyond his role on Coronation Street, Rothwell’s acting career extended into various other television projects. He appeared in series such as Gideon’s Way, The Villains, and notably Channel 4’s soap Brookside, where he portrayed Nicholas Black in the 1980s.

For younger audiences, Rothwell was also recognized as the presenter of children’s programs like Picture Box and Hickory House, introducing him to a new generation beyond traditional drama roles. More recently, he made guest appearances in shows including Doctors.

Following the announcement of his passing, William Roache paid tribute to Rothwell, describing him as “a very good actor and a delightful man.” Coronation Street also expressed condolences, remembering him as one of the original cast members who brought the memorable character of David Barlow to life.

His family emphasized that beyond his screen achievements, Rothwell will be deeply missed as a loving family figure, cherished by all who knew him.
