Sindh Government to Open Shahrah-e-Bhutto Expressway This Month

The Sindh government is set to inaugurate the Shahrah-e-Bhutto expressway later this month, a development expected to significantly alleviate Karachi’s worsening traffic congestion and improve access to the M-9 motorway. This initiative aims to provide a vital transportation link for residents of Pakistan’s largest city.

Senior Sindh Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon announced the plan on Thursday, emphasizing that the expressway’s full opening will directly connect Karachi to the M-9 motorway, thereby addressing long-standing traffic challenges faced by commuters.

Karachi, the commercial capital of Pakistan, has been grappling with severe traffic jams, deteriorating infrastructure, and a shortage of public transport options amid rapid urban growth. The provincial government has prioritized completing major infrastructure projects to tackle these issues.

Memon highlighted that alongside the Shahrah-e-Bhutto project, efforts are underway to finalize the Red Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system and other transport initiatives. Despite the complexities involved in large-scale urban development, authorities are pushing to complete these projects promptly.

He also apologized for the inconvenience caused by ongoing construction activities, noting that the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and the local government department are collaborating on several major projects. Some previously stalled initiatives have been revived, and a modern BRT line is currently under construction.

In a significant development, Memon revealed that during President Asif Ali Zardari’s recent visit to China, Pakistan signed a memorandum of understanding for the installation of a desalination plant in Karachi. This plant, to be built by a Chinese company, will convert seawater into potable water, aiming to alleviate the city’s chronic water shortages.

Additionally, Memon mentioned that the government is considering relief measures for salaried individuals in the upcoming budget and hinted at the launch of another major development project soon, signaling continued focus on urban improvement and public welfare.
