Michelle Heaton has opened up about the severe impact addiction had on her life, confessing that alcohol once took priority over her husband and children during her most challenging years. The former Liberty X singer became emotional while discussing her struggles with alcohol and drug dependency, admitting there were times she no longer wished to face each new day.
On Paul C Brunson’s We Need to Talk podcast, the 46-year-old detailed how addiction slowly consumed her life, making it impossible to stop drinking despite her strong desire to do so. She explained that alcohol stripped away her ability to care, stating, “In that moment I loved the alcohol more than my family,” describing it as the most accurate way to express her experience.
Heaton, who shares two children, Faith and Aaron, with her husband Hugh Hanley, revealed that her difficulties began with binge eating before evolving into alcohol dependence during her time with Liberty X. This later escalated to cocaine use. She also spoke about how her condition worsened following a mastectomy in 2012, an event that made her feel as though she was losing her sense of self.
Reflecting on her lowest moments, Heaton admitted she sometimes felt trapped and unwilling to continue living. Her husband Hugh witnessed her health decline with helplessness, while reality star Katie Price played a crucial role in encouraging Heaton to seek rehabilitation, helping her take the initial steps toward recovery.
Having maintained sobriety since 2021, Heaton recently celebrated five years free from addiction. She remains committed to openly discussing her journey through addiction and recovery, aiming to inspire others facing similar battles.
