Global organisations have initiated various campaigns to pay tribute to nurses in anticipation of International Nurses Day 2026, acknowledging their essential contributions to healthcare systems around the world.
Celebrated annually on May 12, the upcoming event will follow the theme “Our Nurses. Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives,” as designated by the International Council of Nurses. This theme underscores the critical impact nurses have on patient outcomes and healthcare delivery.
Among the early activities, the Rapid Relief Team has announced a month-long series of events across North America starting this May, aimed at honoring nursing professionals and raising awareness about their indispensable work.
Meanwhile, St Wilfrid’s Hospice in the United Kingdom has drawn attention to the significant role its nursing staff play in providing palliative care to over 340 patients at any given time. The hospice manages services valued at more than £10 million annually, delivering free end-of-life care throughout the year.
The hospice highlighted the commitment and skill of its nurses, emphasizing their provision of physical, emotional, and spiritual support not only within the hospice but also in the wider community. It also noted that these services depend heavily on public donations to remain accessible without charge.
International Nurses Day originated in 1965 in the United States, with May 12 officially designated in 1974 to coincide with the birthday of Florence Nightingale, a pioneer of modern nursing.
In a significant development, the day continues to serve as a global platform to recognize the dedication and resilience of nurses who often work under demanding and challenging conditions, reinforcing their indispensable role in healthcare worldwide.
