German FM Supports Israel’s Military Actions in Lebanon at Berlin Talks

Germany has expressed its backing for Israel’s focused military campaign in southern Lebanon, describing the intervention as a crucial measure to maintain regional stability. This support was conveyed during high-level diplomatic discussions in Berlin, where German foreign policy spokesperson Johann Wadephul met with his Israeli counterpart, Gideon Sa’ar.

In a joint briefing, Wadephul presented a balanced perspective that recognized Israel’s right to self-defense while emphasizing Germany’s commitment to humanitarian principles. He acknowledged the strategic necessity of the operation aimed at dismantling militant networks along the border but stressed the importance of safeguarding civilian lives amid the conflict.

“The military actions are essential to neutralize the immediate threat,” Wadephul remarked, while cautioning that the escalation must not disproportionately impact non-combatants. He called on the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to exercise proportionality and take all possible measures to protect civilians as the offensive extends deeper into Lebanese territory.

Meanwhile, the meeting between Wadephul and Sa’ar highlights growing cooperation between Berlin and Jerusalem during a critical period. Sa’ar’s visit to Germany’s capital is viewed as a strategic effort to strengthen European backing for Israel’s comprehensive security approach across multiple fronts.

Beyond the immediate military objectives in Lebanon, the officials explored broader strategies aimed at achieving a sustainable ceasefire, which would require strict adherence to UN Resolution 1701. By facilitating these talks, Germany reinforces its position as a vital mediator in the Middle East, striving to balance firm security actions with the pressing need for humanitarian relief in the region.
