New Margalla Road-Motorway Link Project Underway with Minimal Traffic Impact

A significant infrastructure initiative has commenced to enhance connectivity between Islamabad and the motorway by extending Margalla Road directly to the highway. Work is currently in progress on this vital link.

Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi recently visited the construction site to assess the project’s advancement and received detailed briefings on its scope and timeline. The development involves building a 2.7-kilometre stretch featuring a three-lane main carriageway flanked by two-lane service roads on each side.

Key elements of the project include the construction of an interchange at Sangjani, two underpasses, and a bridge over GT Road. The Sangjani Interchange is slated for completion by July 31, following directives from Minister Naqvi to expedite progress and ensure timely delivery.

Designed to offer a faster and more efficient route between Islamabad and the motorway, the new link aims to alleviate traffic congestion and shorten travel times for commuters. The overall project is scheduled for completion by December 2026, with an additional 2.5-kilometre segment managed by the Punjab government.

During the site visit, senior officials from the Capital Development Authority and Islamabad administration were also present. They highlighted that the current road layout and the planned construction locations are unlikely to cause significant disruptions to traffic flow on Margalla Road or the motorway.

Construction activities will be executed in carefully phased stages, incorporating temporary diversions and engineered work zones to maintain uninterrupted vehicle movement. Comprehensive traffic management strategies are in place to minimize short-term congestion, ensuring that long-term connectivity improvements are achieved without major inconvenience to commuters.
