Air India to Reduce Flights Amid Rising Fuel Costs and Strait Tensions

Air India plans to scale back its flight operations throughout June and July as it grapples with escalating financial challenges. Outgoing CEO Campbell Wilson highlighted that a sharp increase in jet fuel prices, triggered by escalating tensions in the Strait region, has substantially raised the airline’s operating expenses.

Additionally, the geopolitical situation has forced the airline to adopt longer flight paths, further inflating costs and rendering several routes unprofitable. Consequently, Air India has cautioned that disruptions to its flight schedule are likely to persist. The airline has called on its staff to cooperate during this difficult period, underscoring the operational strain caused by rising costs and ongoing geopolitical uncertainty.

Meanwhile, in a significant development in the US aviation sector, Spirit Airlines has terminated all its flights across America. On May 2, passengers were informed of the airline’s complete cessation of operations following an orderly wind-down process initiated by Spirit Aviation Holdings, the parent company.

Authorities advised travelers who had purchased tickets through Spirit not to proceed to airports, assuring them that refunds would be issued. However, customers were warned that assistance with rebooking on other airlines would not be provided. The airline has faced severe financial difficulties in recent years, casting substantial doubt on its ability to maintain operations.

Spirit Airlines has filed for bankruptcy twice, most recently in August 2025. President and CEO Dave Davis announced that the company had reached a restructuring agreement to move forward. However, he emphasized that the recent and sustained surge in fuel prices left the airline with no viable option but to wind down operations.

Davis explained that sustaining the business would have required hundreds of millions of additional dollars in liquidity, which Spirit was unable to secure. He expressed deep disappointment over the outcome, stating it was not what anyone involved had hoped for.
