Bayern Munich produced an extraordinary comeback to secure a 4-3 victory over Mainz 05 in a thrilling Bundesliga encounter on Saturday. Trailing by three goals at halftime, Bayern’s resurgence was largely fueled by the impactful performances of Michael Olise and Harry Kane during the second half.
Mainz dominated the opening 45 minutes, taking full advantage of Bayern’s sluggish start. The scoring began in the 15th minute when Dominik Kohr capitalized on a corner delivery from Kaishu Sano to put Mainz ahead. Around the 30-minute mark, Paul Nebel extended the lead after Bayern goalkeeper Jonas Urbig saved Nadiem Amiri’s initial shot but was unable to prevent the rebound from being converted.
Just before halftime, Sheraldo Becker made it 3-0 by reacting swiftly to a loose ball following Amiri’s shot that struck the crossbar. Bayern had yet to register a shot on target in the first half, highlighting their struggles against a confident Mainz side.
However, the second half saw a marked change as Bayern introduced Harry Kane and Michael Olise, which sparked their revival. Nicolas Jackson initiated the comeback in the 53rd minute by finishing a cross from Konrad Laimer. Olise then narrowed the gap with a brilliant curling strike, again assisted by Laimer, bringing Bayern within one goal at 3-2.
The momentum continued to shift as Olise delivered a dangerous cross in the 81st minute, allowing Jamal Musiala to equalize despite the goalkeeper’s attempt to intervene. Just two minutes later, Bayern completed their stunning turnaround when Kane scored from close range after Musiala’s shot was blocked, sealing a dramatic 4-3 win and extending Bayern’s winning streak.
In a significant development, Bayern coach Vincent Kompany praised his team’s mentality, emphasizing that the second-half revival was driven more by quality and determination than by major tactical adjustments.
