A tragic incident unfolded in Durham, North Carolina, when a 15-year-old cyclist lost his life after being hit by a vehicle driven by Joseph Savarino, the grandson of former Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski. The crash occurred on a Saturday evening just before 9 p.m., involving the teen who was riding an electric bike.
Joseph Savarino, 26, was behind the wheel of a Ford Explorer at the time of the collision. Authorities took him into custody following the accident, and he was subsequently released on a $100,000 secured bond. In addition to the bond, officials mandated that Savarino surrender his driver’s license as part of the legal proceedings.
In a significant development, Savarino has been charged with a misdemeanor count of driving while impaired. Police records indicate that a breathalyzer test administered nearly four hours after the crash showed his blood alcohol content to be 0.11, which is above the legal limit. This charge adds a serious dimension to the case as investigations continue.
The victim was identified by his mother on social media as Jack O’Shea. She shared that Jack had spent the day with friends before setting out on his routine evening bike ride, a ride that tragically ended in the fatal collision. Meanwhile, court documents reveal that Savarino’s family has a prior history with impaired driving charges, as his brother faced a similar DWI charge in 2022. Notably, Savarino’s mother, Debbie Savarino, is one of Coach Krzyzewski’s daughters, linking the family to this unfortunate event.
