China Urges Restraint After US Seizes Iranian Cargo Ship in Hormuz

China voiced its concern on Monday regarding the United States’ recent interception of an Iranian-flagged cargo vessel, describing the action as a “forced interception.” The Chinese Foreign Ministry emphasized the need for all parties to avoid further escalation and to respect existing ceasefire agreements.

At a routine press briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun highlighted the sensitivity and complexity of the situation in the Strait of Hormuz. He urged those involved to exercise restraint and work towards restoring normal transit through this critical maritime passage.

The US had announced it fired upon and seized the Iranian cargo ship after it attempted to breach the blockade imposed on Iranian ports. In response, Iran’s military stated that the ship was en route from China and condemned the US action as “armed piracy,” promising retaliation.

In a significant development, Beijing called on all parties to sustain efforts aimed at de-escalation. Guo stressed the importance of maintaining momentum in ceasefire talks and negotiations, noting that a window for peace has opened. He urged the creation of favorable conditions to bring the ongoing conflict to a swift conclusion.
