Water Tanker Accident in Karachi Claims Life, Toll Reaches 312 in 2024

A man lost his life after being struck by a water tanker in Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Karachi, near Perfume Chowk, on Saturday. The driver fled the scene immediately following the collision. Rescue teams transported the victim, estimated to be around 30 years old, to the hospital, but his identity remains unknown.

Following the accident, angry bystanders set the water tanker ablaze. This tragedy occurred just days after two young sisters died and a boy was injured in Nazimabad No 1 when their motorcycle lost balance on a damaged road and they were run over by an oil tanker. The police confirmed that the sisters fell due to the poor road condition, and the tanker driver, who initially escaped, was later apprehended along with the vehicle.

Rescue officials report that Karachi has witnessed at least 312 fatalities from traffic accidents so far this year, with 3,275 people injured. Heavy vehicles continue to be a leading cause of these deaths. Specifically, 107 fatalities involved heavy transport, including 48 caused by trailers and 31 by water tankers. Buses accounted for 12 deaths, while dumpers were responsible for five.

This recent incident underscores the persistent problem of reckless driving by heavy vehicle operators in Karachi, especially in densely populated residential neighborhoods. Local residents have frequently expressed their concerns about the unchecked movement of such vehicles, which often results in fatal accidents.
