Russia Opens Market to Pakistani Seafood, 16 Firms Approved for Export

Russia has officially allowed Pakistan to export seafood, marking a significant milestone expected to elevate Pakistan’s seafood shipments to an estimated $800 million, announced Maritime Affairs Minister Junaid Anwar Chaudhry on Friday.

The minister hailed this development as a historic breakthrough for Pakistan’s fisheries industry, emphasizing that exports of fish and seafood to Russia will commence for the first time. Sixteen Pakistani firms have been granted export clearance, opening fresh opportunities for the country’s seafood sector.

In a significant development, Pakistan anticipates expanding its exports to other Eurasian Economic Union member states following access to the Russian market, further enhancing the seafood industry’s growth prospects. Chaudhry highlighted that Pakistan’s Marine Fisheries Department maintains strict adherence to international standards, which is essential for competing effectively in global markets.

Currently, Pakistan’s annual seafood exports are projected to surpass $500 million, with the potential to reach $800 million after entering the Russian market. Initial exports to Russia alone are expected to generate approximately $300 million in revenue.

The minister explained that exports will be transported via sea, air, and land routes, with overland access to Central Asian countries offering a cost-efficient trade corridor. He pointed out strong demand for Pakistani seafood in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan, which could further broaden export opportunities.

Pakistan’s ports are pivotal in facilitating regional trade, and the country’s warm-water fish species are well-positioned to remain competitive internationally. Chaudhry expressed optimism that enhanced infrastructure and compliance with global standards will continue to drive growth in seafood exports.
