Australian authorities have initiated a formal investigation into US pop star Katy Perry after Ruby Rose accused her of sexual assault. The matter has progressed beyond social media allegations to an active police inquiry.
Detectives from Victoria Police’s Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team are examining an alleged historical sexual assault that reportedly occurred in 2010 at a licensed venue in Melbourne’s central business district. While the police have not publicly identified the individuals involved, multiple reports have connected the investigation to the claims made by Ruby Rose.
Victoria Police emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and declined to provide further details, stating it would be inappropriate to comment at this stage. Specialist detectives are managing the case due to its sensitive nature.
The accusations first emerged earlier this month when Rose posted on social media, accusing Perry of sexual assault at a Melbourne nightclub. These posts were later deleted. Rose indicated that the incident took place nearly two decades ago and confirmed she had completed formal reports with police. She further stated that she would no longer publicly discuss the case.
In a follow-up message, Rose wrote, “Hi! Last update on this: As of this afternoon, I have finalized all of my reports. This means I am no longer able to comment, repost, or talk publicly about any of those cases, or the individuals involved.” She has since refrained from further public commentary, citing procedural limitations linked to the ongoing investigation.
Ruby Rose, known for her role in the television series Orange Is the New Black, has stepped back from the issue while authorities conduct their inquiries. The allegations have been strongly denied by Perry’s representatives, who labeled the claims as “categorically false” and described them as “dangerous, reckless lies.” The statement also questioned Rose’s credibility, referencing a history of serious public accusations on social media that were later denied by the accused parties.
Katy Perry has not made a personal statement, with responses limited to those from her representatives. Victoria Police reiterated that the case remains under active investigation and declined to disclose further information, including identities or evidence, due to the sensitivity involved.
Police confirmed the investigation involves the Melbourne Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team (SOCIT) and concerns an alleged sexual assault at a licensed venue in Melbourne’s city centre in 2010. This development has shifted public focus onto both Perry and Rose, moving the case from unverified online claims to a formal legal proceeding under Australian law.
Authorities have noted that subsequent steps will depend on the ongoing investigation’s findings. Rose has indicated that completing formal reports and refraining from public discussion are part of standard procedures in such cases, also allowing her personal space to recover.
For Perry, who has recently drawn media attention due to her relationship with former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the allegations introduce an unexpected legal and media challenge. Victoria Police maintain that no further comments will be issued at this time, as the case continues to unfold with both the allegations and denials at its core.
