Bob Labbe, a seasoned radio broadcaster, has been awarded the Large-Market Radio Personality of the Year in Alabama, marking a significant milestone in his extensive career that spans over five decades. The 72-year-old received this prestigious accolade at the Alabama Broadcasters Association’s annual Abby Awards held in Birmingham, recognizing his enduring impact on the state’s broadcasting landscape.

Labbe’s career, which extends across radio, television, and print media, totals 53 years. He is also well-known as a sports reporter for the Madison Record, establishing himself as a prominent figure within Alabama’s media community. Despite his vast experience, Labbe expressed surprise at the honor, emphasizing its special significance compared to previous awards he has received.

He is most renowned for his long-running radio show, Reelin’ In The Years, broadcast on WLRH-FM in Huntsville. Labbe has hosted this program continuously for 35 years, airing every Friday night in a dedicated four-hour slot. The show has become a beloved and consistent presence for its audience.

A unique aspect of Labbe’s program is his personal archive of over 20,000 vinyl records, featuring music from the 1950s through the 1990s. Drawing from this extensive collection, he curates playlists, shares anecdotes about artists and songs, and interacts with listeners, preserving the essence of classic radio broadcasting.

Labbe’s passion for radio began in childhood, when he would imagine himself as a disc jockey, playing radio shows in his room. He reflected on how his current role has fulfilled that early dream, allowing him to live out a lifelong ambition.

With decades of experience behind the microphone and a dedicated fan base still tuning in weekly, Bob Labbe’s recent award underscores a career characterized by remarkable longevity and unwavering commitment to the craft of broadcasting.
