Punjab Plans to Shorten Summer Vacation and Revise Academic Calendar 2026

The Punjab government is currently evaluating the possibility of shortening the summer vacation period in 2026 to address educational setbacks caused by the recent fuel crisis linked to the Iran war. Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat announced that the administration is contemplating a reduction of summer holidays by 15 to 20 days to help students recover lost study time.

In a significant development, the minister also outlined proposed adjustments to the academic calendar aimed at enhancing the quality of education and ensuring the syllabus is completed on schedule. The plan includes increasing the total number of instructional days from the existing minimum of 180 to approximately 190 days, thereby minimizing the educational gap experienced by students.

Rana Sikandar Hayat emphasized that the current extended holiday periods significantly cut into effective teaching time. To counter this, the government is also considering shortening winter vacations by 5 to 6 days. Additionally, the proposal includes keeping schools open on alternate Saturdays to better structure the academic year.

Notably, the provincial government intends to introduce separate academic calendars for Matriculation and O/A Level students. This change aims to synchronize their study schedules with international examination timelines, providing a more tailored approach to different educational systems.

These initiatives follow the prolonged closure of schools in March 2026, which resulted from geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and an ensuing energy crisis. The government’s measures seek to mitigate the impact of these disruptions and improve the overall educational framework in Punjab.
