The tragic death of Anna Kepner aboard the Carnival Horizon cruise ship has taken a grim turn as US authorities have charged her 16-year-old stepbrother, Timothy Hudson, with murder and aggravated sexual abuse. The incident occurred during a family vacation in November.
Kepner’s body was found concealed beneath a bed in a cabin she shared with two other teenagers, including Hudson. Investigators determined that her death on November 6 resulted from mechanical asphyxia, indicating that her breathing was physically obstructed.
Details of the case emerged only after court documents were unsealed, following a judge’s decision to allow the teenager to be prosecuted as an adult. Hudson was initially charged in February and subsequently indicted on March 10 by the US Justice Department. He has pleaded not guilty and is currently residing with a relative under electronic monitoring instead of being held in custody.
Prosecutors have contested this arrangement, arguing that Hudson poses a danger and have requested the court to reconsider his release. Meanwhile, Kepner’s father expressed the family’s trust in the justice system but voiced concern over the accused not being detained, describing the situation as deeply painful and complex for everyone involved.
US Attorney Jason Reding Quiñones highlighted the gravity of the charges, noting that they involve alleged crimes committed aboard a vessel in international waters. This case is particularly notable as federal prosecutions involving minors are rare, drawing significant attention.
Kepner, a high school cheerleader from Florida, was fondly remembered by her loved ones as a vibrant and lively individual. The legal proceedings are ongoing, with further developments expected in the near future.
