Imtiaz Ali Confirms No Sequels for ‘Jab We Met’ and ‘Tamasha’

Imtiaz Ali has officially dispelled rumors regarding sequels to two of his most cherished films, confirming that neither Jab We Met 2 nor Tamasha 2 are in development. The filmmaker recently addressed ongoing fan speculation about the future of characters like Geet and Aditya from the 2007 hit Jab We Met, a question that continues to captivate audiences. However, Ali made it clear that revisiting these stories is not part of his plans.

He acknowledged hearing the calls for a sequel but pointed to the reception of Love Aaj Kal—his follow-up to the 2009 original—as a reminder that sequels do not always guarantee success or resonate with viewers. Ali highlighted that his creative process is guided by instinct rather than calculated decisions. “If something comes strongly to me as a maker, then I will,” he explained, but stressed that in the case of Jab We Met, he prefers to leave the story untouched. “Some things are best left as they are.”

Both Jab We Met and Tamasha are celebrated as iconic works in Ali’s filmography, known for their compelling narratives and memorable characters. In a significant development, the director also shared insights into his broader artistic philosophy, emphasizing that he does not approach filmmaking as a commercial venture. “I don’t want to start from a point of view of ‘this is a money-making plan,’” he said. “Good films cannot be made that way. They have to come from a place where you feel connected to the story.”
