Lisa Kudrow Critiques Modern Sitcoms for Playing It Safe with Humor

Lisa Kudrow has expressed her views on why current sitcoms fail to resonate as strongly as the classics, attributing this to a growing caution in comedic content. In a recent discussion with Lily Tomlin for Interview Magazine, the Friends star highlighted that many of today’s sitcoms shy away from the daring humor that once characterized the genre.

Kudrow pointed out that modern shows appear “too afraid” to challenge audiences or provoke discomfort, which she considers a vital ingredient for exceptional comedy. She emphasized that comedy thrives on unpredictability and surprise, elements often missing in contemporary productions. “You need things you didn’t see coming,” she remarked, underscoring the importance of unexpected humor.

Reflecting on legendary sitcoms such as Friends, Seinfeld, and 30 Rock, Kudrow praised their sharp writing and fearless approach to humor. In contrast, she confessed that many current multi-camera sitcoms fail to engage her, often seeming less authentic or compelling. Having recently returned to television with the final season of The Comeback, Kudrow stressed that truly memorable comedy tends to push boundaries rather than remain “tame.”

For her, the most impactful jokes are those that make viewers think, “I can’t believe they just said that.” She reiterated, “Comedy is about surprise. You need things you didn’t see coming.” Notably, Kudrow’s return to the sitcom scene occurred on March 22, when The Comeback premiered its third and concluding season on HBO.
