Pakistan to Launch Digital Fuel Management System Amid Petrol Price Rise

The Pakistan government has resolved to introduce a comprehensive digital fuel management system across petrol stations nationwide, coinciding with a rise in petrol prices. This initiative includes the implementation of a monthly petrol quota for privately owned vehicles, restricting fuel purchases beyond the allocated limit.

The primary objective of this system is to enhance transparency and regulate fuel usage throughout the country. Preparations for the launch are well underway, with the National Information Technology Board collaborating closely with the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication to finalize the testing of mobile devices and a dedicated application tailored for this purpose.

In a significant development, the Pakistan Digital Authority has developed an app to digitally monitor petrol distribution. To facilitate this, modern mobile devices valued at around Rs36,000 each will be distributed to petrol pumps. The procurement costs will be covered by oil marketing companies, while the IT board will manage the acquisition and distribution process through the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) to the relevant fuel stations and companies.

OGRA has already been instructed to direct oil firms to proceed with purchasing these devices. Officials have confirmed that the technical specifications and operational capabilities of the mobile handsets have been thoroughly tested and approved. A detailed summary has been submitted by the IT ministry to the Cabinet Division for final authorization.

Meanwhile, the government is expected to announce the specific monthly petrol quota for private vehicles soon, as part of its broader strategy to digitize and streamline the fuel supply chain across Pakistan.
