Ballistic Missiles Hit Bahraini Oil Refinery Amid Rising Gulf Tensions

In a significant escalation of regional tensions, Bahrain’s major oil refinery was targeted by ballistic missiles in the early hours of Monday. The attack struck the Bapco Energies facility located on Sitra Island, igniting a large fire in a storage unit and sending thick smoke billowing over the capital city.

Emergency responders have since managed to control the blaze, but the incident has further unsettled the already fragile energy market and intensified concerns about a potential broader conflict in the Gulf region.

The Sitra refinery, recently enhanced through a multi-billion-pound expansion to increase its production capacity, is a vital component of Bahrain’s economic infrastructure. Reports confirm that at least two missiles breached local air defenses, inflicting damage on the plant’s storage area. Although the Ministry of Interior has not confirmed any casualties, the refinery’s operational status is currently under assessment.

This attack fits a disturbing pattern of deliberate strikes on critical energy infrastructure throughout the region, prompting petrochemical companies to reevaluate their security measures and supply chain robustness amid ongoing aerial threats.

Meanwhile, the strike coincided with a rise in cross-border military activities, with experts noting the use of advanced drone and missile technologies in a coordinated manner. International observers have voiced serious concerns about the security of the Strait of Hormuz and adjacent maritime routes, as repeated attacks jeopardize the uninterrupted flow of global oil shipments.

Following the incident, crude oil prices surged on London markets, reflecting investor apprehension over possible retaliatory actions. Diplomatic efforts are ongoing as regional powers and international allies deliberate on how to respond to this direct assault on Bahraini sovereign territory.
