Hacks Final Season Sees Jean Smart Embrace Lighter, Playful Tone

As the acclaimed series Hacks prepares to conclude with its fifth and final season, Jean Smart is embracing a side of the show that has been less prominent recently — pure, unapologetic humor. Following a darker narrative arc in the previous season, there was some concern that viewers might lose interest in Deborah Vance’s character. However, the opposite occurred, with audiences remaining deeply engaged and willing to explore more complex and uncomfortable emotional territory alongside her.

This strong viewer response appears to have influenced the direction of the upcoming season. The fifth installment of Hacks promises a tonal reset, characterized by a lighter, more relaxed, and playful atmosphere. Jean Smart expresses genuine relief at returning to this space, viewing it not as a retreat but as a natural progression after delving into heavier emotional themes. The show seems to have earned this shift through its previous explorations.

Behind the scenes, the creators have been fulfilling long-standing creative ambitions before the series concludes. These include a deeper exploration of fan culture and the introduction of more surreal and offbeat moments. Such creative liberties often emerge when a show is aware it is approaching its end, allowing for less restraint and more instinctive storytelling.

For Jean Smart, now in her seventies, Hacks has been more than just another successful role; it has quietly transformed the later phase of her career. She acknowledges, with subtlety, that opportunities like this were not always available to women of her age. The entertainment landscape, she suggests, is evolving — slowly but significantly. Stories have become broader, messier, and more reflective of real life, including the experiences of older women who were previously marginalized in storytelling.

With the final season of Hacks set to premiere on April 9, it promises to be less of a somber farewell and more of a confident closing chapter that allows room for a bit of silliness once again.
