Pakistan Ensures Ample Petroleum Supply with Rs12.9bn Subsidy Amid US-Iran Tensions

The federal government has reassured the public that Pakistan is not experiencing any shortage of petroleum products despite the ongoing tensions between the US and Iran, which have disrupted fuel supplies worldwide. Officials confirmed that even with concerns over a possible blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, the country’s fuel reserves remain stable and distribution continues efficiently across all regions.

This assurance was delivered during a joint briefing in Islamabad by Federal Energy Minister Musadik Malik and Broadcasting and Communication Minister Attaullah Tarar. They addressed the recent increase in fuel prices, highlighting that the government has allocated a targeted subsidy amounting to Rs12.9 billion to stabilize fuel costs and protect consumers from the impact of rising international crude oil prices.

The ministers emphasized that this subsidy aims to keep essential petroleum products affordable for both urban and rural populations. They credited strong supply chain management and diversified import routes for maintaining a consistent fuel supply, which has prevented shortages and discouraged panic buying nationwide.

Citizens were encouraged to continue relying on uninterrupted access to petrol and diesel throughout the country. The officials also noted that the subsidies are strategically directed to support vulnerable groups such as farmers, motorcyclists, and low-income commuters, while maintaining fiscal prudence.

In a significant development, the government reaffirmed Pakistan’s resilience amid global energy market volatility by implementing measures to absorb international price shocks and provide relief to ordinary citizens.

Meanwhile, the federal government has introduced free travel on all government-operated buses in Islamabad, including the red, green, and orange lines, until May 3. This initiative aims to assist financially strained residents of the capital and enhance public welfare. The move has been positively received by local commuters, who expressed appreciation for the government’s efforts to support the community during challenging times.
