Pakistan Unveils New Measures to Enhance Maritime Trade and Transshipment

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has endorsed a comprehensive set of initiatives designed to strengthen its maritime industry and establish the nation as a pivotal regional transshipment hub. These decisions follow recommendations from a high-level committee appointed by the Prime Minister and chaired by Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry.

In a significant development, the government has approved the handling of bulk and break-bulk cargo under transshipment arrangements. This step is anticipated to substantially increase port throughput, attract additional shipping lines, and facilitate smoother regional trade by enabling efficient transport of commodities such as grains, coal, minerals, and project cargo.

Meanwhile, approval has also been granted for specialized Roll-on/Roll-off (Ro-Ro) transshipment operations. This includes the handling of vehicles like cars and SUVs through dedicated Ro-Ro vessels. The initiative is expected to open new opportunities in automotive logistics, reduce cargo handling times, and position Pakistan as a crucial hub in regional vehicle distribution networks.

Notably, the government has authorized the handling of Less than Container Load (LCL) cargo for transshipment purposes. This will allow the consolidation and redistribution of smaller shipments, providing greater flexibility for traders and significantly enhancing Pakistan’s appeal to global freight forwarders and logistics companies. This measure is also expected to facilitate transit cargo destined for landlocked Central Asian countries.

Authorities anticipate that these measures will boost port revenues, create employment opportunities in logistics and related sectors, and improve Pakistan’s integration into global supply chains. The steps are part of a broader strategy to expand the country’s strategic maritime presence.

The Minister for Maritime Affairs reiterated the government’s dedication to modernizing port infrastructure, simplifying regulatory frameworks, and fostering an investor-friendly environment. This “mega announcement” reflects a forward-looking vision to capitalize on Pakistan’s geostrategic location and transform its ports into engines of economic growth and regional connectivity.
