Government Announces Fuel Subsidies for Motorcyclists and Transport Sector

ISLAMABAD: In response to a record surge in petrol prices, the government has launched a relief package targeting motorcyclists, transport operators, and small-scale farmers to alleviate their financial strain. Federal Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb outlined the details of the support measures.

Motorcyclists will benefit from a subsidy of Rs100 per litre on a monthly quota of up to 20 litres, applicable for three months. Meanwhile, intercity and freight transport sectors will receive a Rs100 per litre subsidy for one month.

Additionally, goods transport vehicles will be granted monthly financial aid, with trucks allocated Rs70,000 and larger vehicles Rs80,000. Public service buses are set to receive a monthly subsidy of Rs100,000. Support will also extend to Pakistan Railways to help offset rising fuel costs.

Small farmers will be provided a one-time diesel subsidy of Rs1,500 to assist with agricultural expenses. The finance minister noted that these subsidy arrangements will undergo review after one month to assess their impact and sustainability.

This relief package follows the government’s decision to raise petrol prices by Rs138 per litre, bringing the new rate to Rs458.40, and diesel prices by Rs184 per litre to Rs520.35. These increases have pushed fuel costs to unprecedented levels, sparking concerns about escalating inflation across the economy.
