Oracle’s Global Layoffs Impact India Amid Strategic AI Shift

Oracle, the US-based technology giant, has initiated one of its largest global restructuring efforts, with India emerging as one of the most affected regions. Approximately 12,000 employees in India have lost their jobs as the company shifts its focus toward artificial intelligence infrastructure. Worldwide, layoffs could reach up to 30,000, with an additional round expected soon, leaving many workers uncertain about their professional futures.

Headquartered in Austin, Texas, Oracle is chaired by billionaire Larry Ellison. The company confirmed that these job cuts are part of a broader organizational overhaul aimed at streamlining operations and reallocating resources to AI and cloud computing. Severance packages are being offered to those impacted, though some employees must sign agreements to receive them. This restructuring aligns with Oracle’s strategic investments in next-generation data centers and AI technologies, including a $300 billion deal with OpenAI and plans to raise $50 billion in debt to support its AI ambitions.

The layoffs have had a significant human impact. Employees in India and other countries took to social media to share their experiences, expressing the shock and uncertainty caused by the sudden announcements. Hrishikesha Narsha, a group manager in India, posted on LinkedIn, “After 16 incredible years, my journey with Oracle came to an unexpected end.” Many others described colleagues with decades of service suddenly unemployed, facing the challenge of finding new opportunities while dealing with the emotional strain.

Experts note that Oracle’s move reflects a broader trend in the global tech industry, where over 70 companies have cut more than 40,000 jobs this year as they redirect resources toward AI, automation, and operational efficiency. Despite Oracle’s significant AI investments, analysts remain cautious about the billions being spent and the potential returns from this strategic pivot.

These layoffs highlight the growing tension within the technology sector between traditional workforce models and the push to heavily invest in AI capabilities. For technology professionals in India, this wave of job cuts underscores both the opportunities and risks associated with the global transition toward artificial intelligence, signaling a period of uncertainty amid rapid industry transformation.

Oracle, valued at $420 billion, began the layoffs on a recent Tuesday, with reports indicating that around 10,000 employees have already been affected. Its total workforce stands at approximately 162,000. Larry Ellison, the company’s chair and one of the world’s wealthiest individuals with a net worth of $189 billion, is also known for his political alliances, including support for Donald Trump.

Michael Shepherd, a senior Oracle manager not affected by the cuts, confirmed on LinkedIn that the layoffs were substantial, targeting senior engineers, architects, operations leaders, program managers, and technical specialists with expertise in cloud infrastructure, government and sovereign cloud projects, and enterprise-scale systems.

The layoffs were communicated via email, citing “careful consideration of Oracle’s current business needs” as the reason for the terminations. On the same day, Oracle acknowledged cutting 491 roles among employees working remotely in Washington state and at its Seattle offices.

These workforce reductions coincide with Oracle’s increased investments in data centers, which are vital for developing and operating AI systems. The company aims to compete with cloud rivals such as Alphabet and Amazon. Its ambitious plans include a $300 billion data center deal with OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, alongside proposals to raise $50 billion in new debt, raising investor concerns about the associated costs.

In a regulatory filing from March, Oracle projected that its 2026 restructuring plan could cost up to $2.1 billion, mainly due to severance and related expenses.

This trend mirrors a wider industry shift toward AI, with over 70 tech companies cutting approximately 40,480 jobs this year as they reallocate resources to AI development. This wave of layoffs has increased uncertainty for workers across the technology sector.
