King Charles III and Queen Camilla are set to embark on a landmark diplomatic journey to the United States this April, Buckingham Palace announced on March 31. The state visit follows an invitation extended by President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump, who will host the royal couple during a series of events highlighting the enduring ties and evolving partnership between the United Kingdom and the United States.
Notably, the timing of this trip aligns with the 250th anniversary of American independence, a milestone that occurred during the reign of King George III, an ancestor of King Charles. Buckingham Palace emphasized that this visit is being undertaken on the advice of His Majesty’s Government and at the formal invitation of the U.S. President.
The palace statement detailed that the itinerary will focus on celebrating both the historic connections and the contemporary bilateral relationship between the two nations. Following the U.S. visit, King Charles and Queen Camilla will travel to Bermuda, marking the King’s inaugural royal visit as monarch to a British Overseas Territory.
This upcoming visit will be King Charles’ first official state visit to the United States since ascending the throne, although he has previously visited the country 19 times as the Prince of Wales, including trips accompanied by Camilla. During her reign, Queen Elizabeth II conducted four state visits to the United States, underscoring the importance of the transatlantic relationship.
In a significant development, the royal couple’s stop in Bermuda will also be historic, as it will represent King Charles’ first visit there as monarch, further strengthening ties within the British Overseas Territories.
