Viral Video of Doctors Racing During Surgery Prompts Action in Lahore

A viral video capturing doctors and medical staff engaging in inappropriate behavior during surgeries at a Lahore hospital has ignited public outrage and prompted swift action from the Punjab government. The footage, recorded inside the operation theatre of Lady Willingdon Hospital, shows two Caesarean section procedures occurring simultaneously.

Notably, the video appears to depict doctors competing to finish their surgeries first, with some staff members making victory signs while the operations were ongoing. Voices in the clip seemingly support the claim of a race between the surgeons, raising serious concerns about medical ethics and patient safety.

In response to the incident, the Punjab government has demanded explanations from the hospital administration. The Department of Specialised Healthcare has instructed Lady Willingdon Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Farah Inam and Head of the Gynaecology Department Professor Dr Uzma Hussain to provide their statements within three days.

Meanwhile, postgraduate training for four doctors—Dr Tayyaba Fatima Toor, Dr Maham Amin, Dr Zainab Tahir, and Dr Ayesha Afzal—has been suspended pending investigation. Officials emphasized that such conduct violates medical ethics and breaches both government regulations and the hospital’s standard operating procedures.

Punjab Health Minister Khawaja Salman Rafique condemned the behavior, describing it as a violation of professional standards and an affront to patient dignity. Meanwhile, Health Secretary Azmat Mahmood warned that disciplinary action would follow if the hospital fails to submit a satisfactory response within the given timeframe.

The authorities have classified the incident as a grave example of negligence in fulfilling official responsibilities, underscoring the need for strict adherence to ethical medical practices.
